The seasons are changing quickly, especially here in Minnesota! Our fall has abruptly turned into winter with a snowstorm that feels never ending. I am not one to specifically decorate for each holiday however I do like to make a few changes when the seasons change. I will use a different color palette for spring, summer and then I clump fall and winter together (with minor tweaks as Christmas rolls around of course!). A big part of this is because as I mentioned – here in Minnesota our fall and winter seem to mix together, but also because contrary to what one might believe since I am an Interior Designer, I don’t enjoy redecorating my home over and over and over again for each holiday. To me that feels exhausting and overwhelming. I would prefer to focus my energy on designing (rather than decorating). With that being said – there are a few key elements that I change up time and time again as the seasons change and I wanted to share those with you! These are simple updates you can make to keep the ever changing holidays from causing stress and anxiety with redecorating!
Throw Pillows
Throw pillows are so impactful in a space. The fabrics and colors you choose change up the entire mood of the space without changing a single other thing! I am a maximalist designer and feel that no space is complete without a plethora of throw pillows. Pro Tip: ONLY purchase pillow covers and then keep your tried and true pillow inserts (my fav ones linked here). That way you can easily store the pillow covers that you aren’t using at the moment. No longer are the days of a pillow closet fully taken over by full sized pillows! Now you have yet another excuse – to buy that throw pillow 🙂
Here are a few of my favorite throw pillow combinations that scream fall and winter holiday season to me!
Throw Blankets
It is ALLLL about the faux fur you guys! It brings in all the warmth and texture you will need to give your space that final cozy vibe. I honestly use faux fur throws year round because I think they add an element of luxury to my designs, but you best believe I don’t skip them in the cooler months!
Here are a few of my favorites!
This is probably my favorite tried and true faux fur blanket. I just used it in a project (can read more about that project HERE). This is in the color “platinum”. Isn’t it so luxurious!?
The cult favorite Anthropologie Sophie blanket is another must have. I believe it comes out in fun new colors around the holiday season. I already have it in the ochre color, but plan to swoop it up in the white. But I also really want the blush. Ohhh the decisions!!
Mantle Decor/Art
Your mantle is the focal point of your living room! I typically keep mine fairly neutral year round with a more splurge worthy piece of art of a stunning mirror. But this is the space where you can make simple changes that really highlight the holiday! This is an area I usually go to town on when Christmas time rolls in.
Here are a few splurge worthy pieces of art and mirrors that can easily work year round but will also compliment Thanksgiving and/or Christmas decor absolutely beautifully!!
Florals
There is not a season that goes by where I don’t switch out the florals in my home. I also don’t skip out on florals even in the dead of winter! They bring life to my home….and they will to yours as well! Faux floral arrangements can be pricy! You can certainly take your hand at making your own by purchasing floral stems from Hobby Lobby or Michaels otherwise Etsy is a great option to buy custom made floral arrangements.
Other Tips:
Keep your rug neutral so it can easily work in your space year round (I don’t follow this rule because you know I like me some bold and fun rugs)
